Colour And Light

"Dancing and toe tapping. Great voice and songs reminiscent of the great Bob Dylan and many of the other great story tellers."

I have been waiting for this new release since August 2008 after having the pleasure of seeing Andy perform live at The Screaming Eagle in Inlet, New York.

Once again I find myself studying his songs one by one. I come away with a mood that wont leave me for hours. As a singer songwriter myself it is impossible to be uninspired by Andy's new CD, Colour And Light. Although the CD lacks the energy of Andy's live performance on some tracks, the messages always comes through perfectly clear. There is an honesty and lack of polish in the recordings that projects an "in your face" confidence that is well suited for the subject matter and Andy's style of play. Reminiscent of Woody Guthrie and early Dylan. The Mad Trapper Albert Johnson, is a fascinating story, so to is the sadness of The Hanging Of Marie Angelique. Romeo Dallaire needs to be heard around the world and Sabrina is on repeat in my car. Andy's strength is his writing, which is nothing less than brilliant on this new CD. I spoke briefly to Andy in August and he promised a 5th CD next summer. I can't wait. Andy is a gentleman and a true folk troubadour. Colour and light is a two thumbs up CD!

Roots,
Andrew's Castle ****
Andy McGaw (Independent)

If Kemptville's Andy McGaw ever raps at your kitchen door guitar in hand, for goodness’ sake invite him in. Call your friends. Open a bottle. And make sure he plays the fifteen radiant folk tunes from his latest album, ‘cause they’ll sooth and inspire and entertain you and your pals. Oh you might query the choice of occasional lyrics (“hassle” does rhyme with “castle” in the title track, but its still a limp word) and you wouldn’t want him reprising the studio chatter that adds nothing to an already- intimate album. Those provisos aside, let the man sing about love and addiction and lonely Carolina Jackson, who lost a father and a lover to the Newfoundland sea. Your kitchen will be a better place for it.

Album - Andrew’s Castle (Independent)
Artist - Andy McGaw

Andrew’s Castle had me laughing, heart broken, angry and wanting to race home, grab my guitar and finish that song I’ve been working on for the past five years!

Track Three, Ode to Harry Stonechild, is guaranteed to cause a stir as it pulls no punches and even refers to the “Cops” as Nazis in their treatment of Niel (Harry) Stonechild. The song paints a what if scenario of “a hundred thousand braves along the hill top and along the river a hundred thousand more” and my favorite lines on the record, “the matter is your strength in constitution. In the company of Nazis I’m a Jew”

The writing is simplistically brilliant. Andy’s voice is honest and sweet. The guitar playing is unique, old fashioned. The up close and personal recording quality is masterful.

If you truly love folk songs and acoustic guitar you will love “Andrew’s Castle”

December, 2008 …at Inlet, New York

"…There is no heaven there is no hell. Religion, it seems to me, is only a clever idea to control people through fear intimidation. There is only a fascinating diversity of life on this beautiful but sick and dieing planet earth. Turn off the TV. Read a book. Write a poem. Paint a memory. Learn to play an instrument. Question everything you see and hear. Question everything. Never mind what the people sitting next to you might think. If you don’t like something say so. If you love someone tell them and for the record … the colour of breast cancer is not pink, it's diarrhea shit brown and puke green."
