"Colour and Light"
Don't let the intricacy of the guitar playing, the catchy melodies that you find yourself humming, fool you. "Colour and Light", Andy McGaw's latest recording, is a flinty, raw, reflection of society. He has written of power and politics, of you and me. Those all too human attitudes and failings which we would rather ignore than acknowledge.
Stylistically, it is poetical and sensually appealing. And totally unpredictable. There is a beauty in the simplicity of melody and expression that leaves one unprepared for the impact of the visions he shares. Andy's skill as a storyteller brings histories and stories to life with sensitivity and uncompromising honesty. His characters, often the marginalized, have stories not comfortably discussed at the dinner table.
The production skill of Emeric Loan of Studio 43 is evident in a clean, well balanced sound, polished yet personal. It doesn't match the intensity of hearing Andy perform in concert, but it comes close.
"Colour and Light" is the perfect purchase for those who enjoy listening, discussing, debating. It contains the musical offerings of an exceptionally talented singer/song writer: one who manages to challenge the status quo and still entertain. Some may find the lyrics controversial; some may take issue with points of view. All will discover an album, which is thought provoking and fresh in its candour. It isn't perfect, but then again, neither is Andy. That, my friend, is the whole point.
